Research

Research areas

Six research areas spanning cognition, motivation, assessment, and technology.

Cognition & memory

How retrieval, spacing, and worked examples strengthen durable learning.

Motivation & engagement

What sustains effort, belonging, and self-regulation in learners.

Assessment & feedback

Designing assessment and feedback that improve learning rather than just measure it.

Curriculum & instruction

Sequencing, explanation, and practice that make hard ideas learnable.

Learning technology

Evidence-informed use of adaptive tools, tutoring systems, and AI in education.

Equity in learning

How instruction and support can widen or narrow gaps between learners.

Centers & labs

Where the work happens

Our centers convene researchers, fellows, and practitioners around shared methods and long-term questions.

Cognition & Instruction Lab

Experimental and classroom studies of how core cognitive principles transfer to teaching.

Assessment Studio

Design and evaluation of formative assessment and feedback practices.

Professional Learning Program

Evidence-based teacher and trainer development and coaching models.

Learning Technology Group

Responsible evaluation of educational technology and AI tutoring.

Our approach

We treat teaching as a design problem informed by evidence. Rather than promoting any single method, we ask what the research supports for a given goal, learner, and setting.

We then co-design with practitioners and study what happens when the evidence meets the realities of a classroom or training program.
